I had always played that if a team pulls a "pinochle" (all 50 points) it's an automatic win regardless of score. Doesn't happen often (only once in my lifetime - 78+ years), but there's ALWAYS hope the next hand will be it.

I have seen it! It has happened to me last week (IRL game) and is definitely common enough to merit inclusion. Technically, for instance in tournament play, a team needs to be not be in the hole (have negative points) for it to be an automatic win. If you have negative points, you are awarded 500 points, but do not automatically win the game. This is also called turning a "Boston".
